MGNREGS Wage Rates Changed for Various States

Wage rates under MGNREGAS:

Wages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) were recently increased, with raises ranging from 4 to 10% across various states.

Important Points: 

Haryana has the highest wages rate for unskilled workers under the initiative at Rs 374 per day, while Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland have the lowest at Rs 234.Increases have been made on the 2023 wage rates under the scheme that aims to enhance the livelihood security of households in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wages per financial year to every household whose adult members act as volunteers to do unskilled manual work.

The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS)

It is one of the world’s largest job-guarantee initiatives for rural people.

Started : 

– Launched on February 2, 2006. – The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act was passed on August 23, 2005.

The plan aims to provide 100 days of employment annually to adult members of rural households who are prepared to perform unskilled manual tasks related to public work.

The Legal Right to Work Act, unlike previous employment guarantee plans, focuses on alleviating chronic poverty through a rights-based approach.

– At least one-third of beneficiaries must be women households.

    –   Wages must be paid according to the statutory minimum wages specified for agricultural labourers in the state under the [Minimum Wages Act, 1948.

–   Demand-Driven Scheme:

    –   The most important part of MGNREGA’s design is its legally-backed guarantee for any rural adult to get work within 15 days of demanding it, failing which an ‘unemployment allowance’ must be given.

    –   This demand-driven scheme enables the self-selection of workers.

–   Decentralized Planning:

    –   There is an emphasis on strengthening the process of decentralisation by giving a significant role in [Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) in planning and implementing these works.

    –   The act mandates [Gram sabhas] to recommend the works that are to be undertaken and at least 50% of the works must be executed by them.

– Wages must be provided in accordance with the statutory minimum wages stated for agricultural labourers in the state pursuant to [Minimum Wages Act, 1948].

– MGNREGA is a based on demand scheme with a legally-backed guarantee for adults in rural areas to find a job within 15 days or get a ‘unemployment allowance’. This demand-driven model allows workers to select themselves.

– Decentralized Planning: – There is an emphasis on increasing the process of decentralisation by giving a prominent role in [Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) in planning and implementing these works.

– The statute demands [Gram sabhas] to recommend the works that are to be conducted, with at least 50% of the tasks being accomplished.

Gram sabhas conducted by local gram panchats decides the work to be done by mgnregs workers. there should be transparency in selecting and completing the work. At least half of work should be done proposed by grama sabhas.

Every worker who is working under MGNREGS should get work as proposed by grama sabhas. irrigation works, road construction works , repairing roads are the some of the works under MGNREGS .
