🍥 Hyderabad : A substantial increase in IIT tuition fees for undergraduate programs (B.Tech.) is likely for the 2025-26 academic year. Two months ago, the Ministry of Education constituted a committee comprising directors from IIT Bombay, IIT Indore, and IIT Tirupati to review current fees, expenditure on students, and related factors. The last fee hike was in 2016, when tuition fees were raised from ₹90,000 to ₹2 lakhs per year. Now, after eight years, the government is once again focusing on this issue. The increase could be at least 50%, according to initial reports. There are 23 IITs across India, with approximately 17,600 B.Tech. seats available last year.

💥 Final Decision in Council Meeting 🌀 The committee has been tasked with recommending a reasonable fee structure for IITs. Discussions are ongoing, and a final decision is expected at the IIT Council meeting chaired by the Union Minister of Education. The council includes directors from all IITs, as well as the AICTE and UGC chairpersons. Previously, tuition fees were increased from ₹50,000 to ₹90,000 in 2013 and then to ₹2 lakhs in 2016. Based on current trends in income and expenditure, fees may now be revised to ₹3 lakhs annually.

💥 Current Fee Waiver Policies

💠 Complete Fee Waivers: SC, ST, and differently-abled students currently receive full tuition fee waivers. Additionally, students from families with an annual income of less than ₹1 lakh are eligible for a 100% fee waiver, irrespective of their social category.

💠 Partial Waivers: For families earning between ₹1 lakh and ₹5 lakhs annually, a two-thirds fee waiver is provided.

💥 Concerns over Additional Costs A majority of students fund their education through education loans, as they need to cover not just tuition fees but also mess and hostel charges. While IITs have not increased tuition fees in years, there have been accusations that they are significantly raising mess charges. This issue has already drawn criticism, with concerns about affordability for many students.

The upcoming council meeting will finalize the details ahead of the new academic session.
